Proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference (Resolution 31C/ 20)
in 2001, the World Science Day for Peace and Development is an annual event
celebrated all over the world to recall the commitment made at the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science (Budapest
1999).
The purpose of World Science Day for
Peace and Development is to renew the national, as well as the
international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the
responsible use of science for the benefit of society. The World Science Day
for Peace and Development also aims at raising public awareness of the
importance of science and to bridge the gap between science and societies.
An Address delivered by the President of International Organisation of UN Volunteers (IOUNV): Meshiyach Yahzitere Okoh- on World Science Day for Peace and Development
Fellow United Nations Volunteers, today
is World Science Day for peace and Development and we appreciate all efforts of
past and present scientists that braved actions to give the earth a new breathe
of industrial development.
History has proven time and again that
the cherished people are those that have taken difficult decisions that would
have otherwise been swept under the carpet for future generations to takle.
The science world has indeed placed
humanity at the path of greatness and respectability with its numerous
inventions that guarantee for phenomenal changes with evergreen and new
prospects. It has created new opening for investments that enhanced economic and
commercial inter-flow that make the earth a better place for all and sundry.
We are also aware of the position of the
critics on the inventions of the scientists that gear towards mass destruction,
technological inhumanity and scientific atrocities that brings discomfort to
all beings. To this negative trends, we employ the stakeholders to walk by the
rules of engagement as proffered by the United Nations (UN) so as to ease tension
and crises that are inimical to human habitations.
Today, we wish all scientists and stake
holders of this wonderful team a happy day and thereby looking forward on their
improvements on positive areas of activities.
