Call to Action: Violence In West Africa

As the United Nations’ celebration of World Day of Social Justice comes up on 20th February, 2018, the International Organisation of UN Volunteers (IOUNV) advocates to both governments and people of every nation and communities to explore the great opportunity provided by the adoption of International Labour Organization (ILO) on the Declaration of the Social Justice for a Fair Globalization for the benefit of mankind.

In a communique issued by the executive body of IOUNV from its brief meeting held on 12th February, 2018 in Portharcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, a call for mutual friendship and trust between governments, migrants and indigenous people of every land was upheld. The body used the occasion to condemn the aggressive attitude that breed to killing of migrants by indigenes or indigenous killings by migrants.

The President of the body, Meshiyach Yahzitere Okoh commented on the herdsmen versus farmers disputes in various West African countries and called for government intervention for peaceful resolution. The body condemned the killings in North Central and South West of Nigeria.

The Secretary-General, Nana Powel remarked that the basic tenets of the UN adopting 20th of February a celebration of  “World Day of Social Justice” is based as follows “social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations”. He further highlighted supporting the UN in advancing social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.

Contributing, Comrade Alex Balogun, IOUNV Coordinator of the South-Western Nigeria reports of killing of an aged farmer in Isenyi, Oyo State and call on government and other relevant agencies to rise to the challenges of social justice.
